Sympathy for the devil is one of these films that just grip you in so many ways with its twists and twisted storyline. It is a mix of many genres Horror, thriller and psychopathic which most movies wouldn’t be able to pull of this one does and goes even goes that extra bit just to give it that push that makes it one of a kind. This movie just proves that the independent British move is going just as strong and following in the footsteps of ones like 28 days later.
Now this film for my just ticks all the boxes, you have action, gore, humour, sadness all in a very compact space of time which to some i will say will be a bit over powering but to me and many others I think it’s struck a chord that not many films do these days. There is parts in that will mess with your head and something you will just not get but that adds to this film it’s like if i watch it again I now I’ll see something else in the plot i didn’t before and not many films do that and i for one like it. I also think that many will be shocked at just how believable this film can be in the ways the killer interacts and takes care of his victims and way.
It all starts off with the killer or as he calls himself ‘Lucifer’ ‘Andrew Bremner’ just getting on with a normal life but soon changes with something that would seem to be to most insignificant but with it this once normal man turns into a psychopathic killer. Throughout the film there’s little clues to the killers past the main one being is the DLI cross that is crudely drawn on all of his letters to the private inspector how was involved in the first investigation which bring up more questions than answers. The killings seem to random to police to be connected and classed as a planned serial killer but inspector Noble ‘Adam Tuner’ knows somewhere in the killers head there is a some twisted logic behind what he’s doing. To rid the or start to rid the place that he lives in of people that seem to waste their lives drinking do drugs ect that bring down the local image of Durham. With the first sentence to each letter saying the same thing ‘please allow me to introduce myself’ just makes it seem like the killer is acting like he’s a different person with every killing, a different motive for each murder. When the killer takes his youngest victim a boy in his late teen’s inspector Romeo decides the police are not getting anywhere, enough is enough and goes on the hunt for the killer himself. But he soon discovers more than he bargained, more than he ever thought was possible and this is one of the biggest twists within the film so unless you want me to reveal the plot I’ll have to leave my brief plot explanation there.
But that’s just the inspectors point of view throughout the film you also get the killers view on what he’s doing and you do get confused about whom you want to win in words and for the makers of this movie to get you thinking in the way of the killer is just amazing. You sit there wanting him to complete what he’s doing or that might just be my twisted mind working with the film
One thing in this film is how possible it seem, you don’t have any over the top explosions or jumps off 300 ft cliffs it’s in some way believable. The special effects they do use in the film are very nicely done; there is one scene where you catch a glimpse of the killer’s true self which makes you really think about how good this film was made with the effects that you might have missed if you looked away for a second.
This film is a great film a must see for those of you that like really in-depth storylines which you’ll follow from start to end putting all the pieces together to come up with the final outcome. I would go to say that this is up there with psychological genre films like the Hannibal but with just a little less blood and gore which i think opens it up to a bigger Audience. This film is only going to be released in 20 pictures though Britain and my advice to you is go and find one close to you because you’ll just love this film. I give this film 9 out of 10 would have been a full 10 if I let my feelings totally take over but there is just a few things that went against it but most will not even notice but I had to being the one doing the review.
